Religion and TV Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Religion and TV - Essay ExampleEach of these theories, in turn, yields item hypotheses for empirical tests.Informational Needs A guess of Social Influence Giddy and Pritchard (1985) applied the theory of informational needs (Harris and McCombs 1975) to help explain variation in viewing religious TV programming. They did not, however, point pop that this theory has its roots in a theory of religious influence promulgated by White (1968). In particular, Whites conceptualization of how individuals acquire religious values, broader honourable orientations, and other attitudes with motivational consequences was focused on the interactional forces at work within specific communities and congregations. For Catholics, this approach would view members attitudes and behaviors as grounded in a specific parish context. Such an approach would appear quite valuable for understanding patterns of exposure to religious media For example, it would not be surprising if parishioners communicated th eir religious orientations to one another during different parish-related activities, thus reinforcing even greater levels of interest in religious values and orientations. Such heightened interest might likely be expressed through greater consumption of Catholic religious programming, as parishioners attempted to gain more religious information and knowledge from these programs. Parishioners who were less integrated into parish activities and networks, and thus less clear to the forms of interaction that would promote the growth of such informational needs, would probably be less likely to view this type, or any type, of programming. Thus, it is our hypothesis that those individuals with a greater piece of ties to a parish congregation, who interact more frequently with other members of the parish community, and who are more involved in parish life would be more likely to consume Catholic religious programming than other types of programming.Justifies offered to sustenance fina ncial assistanceThere are several additional questions, which cannot be explored with our data, also emerge. What is the actual content of the support of financial assistance primarily for spiritual growth and development, the increase in religious television programming, both locally and nationally, clearly make this an area of investigate to be pursued. In addition, the commitment of mainline religions to increase their presence on the television airwaves suggests that religious institutions have implicit theories about why home viewing audience attempt to participate in financial matters with a spirit. In tune with the infinate by Ralph Waldo trine - Essay ExampleSome hasten done it subconsciously and achieved this state of cosmos while some spend a penny achieved this through reading of scriptures written by people who have done it and have been able to achieve it through discipline (Waldo, 2007). This article tries to analyze the view of one author of a book that enumerates steps that a human macrocosm can follow to achieve this state of being while I investigate these views and offer my personal take on the steps that this author gives. In his book, In Tune with the Infinite Self, Ralf Waldo is trying to point out the steps on can take to be able to be a complete human being. He starts by offering that there is a golden thread in all human beings that when a human being discovers it, it will change the persons life forever. However, this golden thread can only be realized by those who reach for it those who are involuntary to trade their weakness and suffering for strength and health, their pain for peace and calmness, and their poverty for fullness. Waldo looks at this state as the state of being in oneness and in tune with the inner self or the part of oneself that cannot be seen because according to him, every(prenominal)thing starts from the unseen before it becomes seen and it is the unseen that controls the seen and thus getting to know the unseen is what every human should aspire to know. To achieve this the Waldo has highlighted the following aspects Human beings should understand the 1. Supreme facts of the Universe. 2. Supreme facts of Human life. 3. Fullness of life i.e health and vigor. 4. Secret, power, and effect of love 5. cognizance of interior illumination 6. Realization of perfect peace. 7. Coming into fullness of power. 8. Laws of prosperity 9. Ways that men have followed to become prophets, seers, and saviors. 10. Basic principle of all theology In so doing, a person will be able to enter into full realization of lasting riches . Most of these things are visibly clear-cut from a human point of view and it takes a step by step self discovery to realize and understand the next level. The writer says that everything is proper(ip) but what differentiates these things are the different points of views that we as human beings have, it is however worth noting that if all human beings achieve this state of being in touch with the inner self, the point of view will be one what the writer calls oneness (Waldo, 2007). One example he gives is that of optimism and pessimism, according to Waldo, both a pessimist and an optimist are decently in their let sense with the difference being that a pessimists point of view is dimmed by ignorance while an optimist view is illuminated by wisdom. To start understanding one self, Waldo advises that an individual should first understand the supreme fact of the Universe that there is an infinite source of life and all things be it spirit, wisdom, hope, to mention but a few. Acco rding to him, there is only one source of all this and that source is theology. Being certain that some would disagree with this opinion, Waldo says that to him God is a name that can take different forms like the provider, the omnipresent for the believers and thus even the non-believers would agree that there is someone in their own understanding that provides for them but they chose to have a different name for that someone (Waldo, 2007). Outline the key features of utilitarianism Essay Example for Free

Outline the key features of utilitarianism EssayThe theory of utilitarianism was developed by and associated by Jeremy Bentham and utilitarianism is a teleological ethical theory where the moral value of an action at law can be judged by its consequences. Three main philosophers have fuck off up with different types of utilitarianism. Jeremy Bentham introducing locomote Utilitarianism and John Stuart Mill trying to improve the flaws that he encountered with Benthams theory with his territory Utilitarianism and lastly, Peter utterer with his preference utilitarianism.Act Utilitarianism is the original and official form of utilitarianism which states that we must on whatever occasion act in the way which lead produce overall consequences unwrap than those that any other act open to us would produce. Therefore, the greatest happiness principle should inform on any act that we undertake. It only focuses on the outcome of the action and not concerned with the motive or intent ion of the action. Jeremy Bentham, being an hedonist, which he believes that all humanness naturally seeks pleasure and tries to avoid pain. He stated disposition has placed mankind under the government of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure they govern us in all we do, in all we say, in all we think. Therefore, according the Bentham, an action is right if it brought more pleasure and wrong if it produces pain. Once Bentham had established that pleasure and pain were the important qualities to determine the moral values, he then developed the utility principle. The rightness or wrongness of an action is determined by its usefulness. Usefulness refers to the amount happiness caused by the action. The theory is know as the greatest happiness principle which is an action is right if it produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people, believing that this would create happiness, and an intrinsic key to life. The achievable consequences of different actions must b e measured clearly to establish which option generates the most pleasure and the least pain. He introduced the hedonic calculus to measure the consequences. The luxuriant Calculus has seven different elements which include that intensity, duration, certainty or uncertainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity and extent of an action. Act Utilitarianism states that the principle of utility should be applied to both individual situation. John Stuart Mill saw Benthams theory and tried to improve it in his own way which he introduced Rule Utilitarianism.Rule Utilitarianism teaches that we should establish rules ground on the greatest happiness principle and then follow these rules. Therefore there is no need to decide the greatest happiness in every situation because following the rules should in general produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Individual acts can therefore be judged as right or wrong by reference to the rules. Mills basic idea was that pleasure of the min d that spirit were more value than pleasure of the body.He believes that high pleasures are generally more intellectual pleasures such as learning, reading and so on. Whereas, lower pleasures are more sensual pleasures such as eating, drinking, sex, and so on Therefore, reading a book, learning something new would be far superior and preferable as humans can only experience these. He said, it is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied, this means that humans are much more capable of experiencing higher pleasures than animals. Therefore, even if humans are dissatisfied their knowledge of such higher pleasure makes their lives better than animals. Rule Utilitarianism can be divided into two sections which is Strong and Weak rule utilitarianism. Strong rule utilitarians always follow these rules no matter what the outcome will be and believe that these rules should never be broken. Weak rule utilitarians how ever believe that these rules can be broken if more pleasure is produced.Lastly, Peter Singers modern version of utilitarianism which is Preference Utilitarianism. Preference utilitarians believe that something is right if it leads the greatest fulfilment of preference for as many as possible. They consider whether a decision is right or wrong by looking whether it fits in with what people would prefer. Peter Singer was concerned about the minorities and felt that they should also be included when considering what is best for everyone. He also believes that animals have preference, not just humans. And this is because they also olfaction pain and they have a preference to not feel pain.
